Bring on the 2010/11 season say our Old Scotch cricketers, as they strive for a double hat-trick of premierships.
WORDS: NICH HILDEBRANDT – PRESIDENT, OLD SCOTCH CRICKET CLUB
Two-time premiership captain Rob Ashton paced stern-faced among his team on the side of the Xavier Main Oval. His men were only moments from premiership glory yet his notorious professionalism, a trait which had led his team this far, prevented him from celebrating just yet. When he asked for a score summary for the fourth time that over, it dawned on me why this cricket team was about to complete a hat trick and win its third successive MCC Club XI cricket title.
In Rob Ashton and Traviss Orr the club has not only two of the most talented cricketers in the competition, but also two whose proficiency and desire to win is matched by no team. Under them is a group that lost only one game during the season, a relaxed yet determined bunch that thrives on a culture built by characters such as six-time premiership player Gary Bennett.
Further on from that is 2nd XI captain James ‘Plugger’ Simon and his dedicated collection of schoolyard heroes. A ragtag group with a quiet desire for success, the 2nd XI made the finals for the first time since the reintroduction of a seconds team, but were unfortunately heaved out at the hands of Old Wesley in the first elimination final.
And then there is the hard-working committee toiling behind the scenes. An assortment of youth and experience intertwines to provide an enjoyable but professional club atmosphere for players and supporters to benefit from.
From there, sponsors and club members provide the important financial backing and support that ensures the club continues to grow. In particular, I thank the generosity of Rohan Aujard at Pulse Pharmacy, the Mt Erica Hotel, OSCA and Bendigo Bank, and recognise the support of all our social members.
So as Hugh Thomas bashed the winning runs to give Old Scotch victory in the second match of the three-match grand final series, relief trickled through me and I looked over to see Rob’s face bubbling in delight, as players and supporters embraced with that winning feeling. Winning a third premiership is a pleasure, but winning it by beating Xavier is pure ecstasy.
There were plenty of stories: a swashbuckling 93 by Ed Oliver, George Dick’s stranglehold bowling and Scott Haines’ safe hands, but at the end of the day a seasoned team effort by all mentioned above secured this famous victory. Surround yourself in the excitement in 2011 as we go for four in a row!
